In Tanna there are Christian Villages,
Jon From Cult Villages and Traditional Melanesian Custom
Villages. You are welcome to visit any of these during
your stay.
Friendly Bungalow's accommodation are surrounded by traditional
Tanna Custom Villages. The villagers will be only too
happy to show you their homes, gardens and introduce
you to their families and their way of life. Their dug-out
canoes are on the beach right next to the Friendly Bungalows
and the fishermen will sit and talk with you and perhaps
show you how they build their canoes. The women bathe
and do their laundry at the river just up the beach from
the bungalows.
There are various Tanna custom ceremonies that take
place throughout the year. These are unplanned, and happen
when the villagers decide they should. The Village Chief
usually invites guests staying at Friendly Bungalows
to attend the ceremonies. Two of the most spectacular
Tanna ceremonies are Circumcision festivals and Weddings.
Every three years the magnificent Toka festival takes
place. This is a celebration which lasts for three days
and involves thousands of people.
For guests wishing to see a display of traditional custom
dancing, they can do so in the nearby village of Enima.
The villagers ask for a donation.
