A quiet, secluded cove on Tanna's southeast
coast.

Friendly Bungalows is about a one hour
drive from the airport. You'll drive
right across the middle of Tanna, crossing the mountain
chain, pausing on the crest of the peak to look along
the entire eastern coast of Tanna, seeing Erromango to
the north, Aniwa and Futuna to the east. The volcano
is right there below you, sending up smoke signals from
the deep earth.
Green, lush forests cloak the jagged mountain scape.
A cool refreshing breeze, enriched by plants, small streams,
and the tang of the volcano, lifts up the mountain slopes
from the coast.
Then down you go, onto the windward side of Tanna, past
villages and people walking alongside the road, past
a school with children in bright coloured clothing playing
in a big field. A young woman by the roadside catches
your eye. She is smiling with her friends, a rich happy
smile, and her hair is done up with peaks of flower blossoms.
She looks exactly like Mother Nature. |
This is the best part of
Tanna. Close to the volcano, the Jon Frum Cult village,
glittering white sand beaches at Port Resolution, Waterfalls
hidden in the deep jungle, hot springs running over the
sand, custom villages all around.
The Friendly transport drives down through a narrow pass,
passing under children standing on a coconut tree trunk
that has fallen across the top of the ravine, and finally,
slows to enter a secluded cove by the sea.
The bungalows are woven from the jungle and into the
old trees that grow just above the sandy
beach. The whole place looks friendly and welcoming. |

The Friendly transport stops at the reception area, and
the hour-long rumble amplifies the sudden quiet when
the engine shuts down. The surf is a muffled percussion,
the birds a bright chorus, a hen with her chicks cluck
and peep, and two smiling young ni-Vanuatu ladies giggle
like a melody as they come walking toward you along the
yellow-leaf path from the bungalows. You sense their
shyness and their complete identity with this place,
this friendly secluded cove on the southeast cost of
Tanna.
You look around, take a deep breath filled with the
fresh sea breeze, and decide right then and there that
you made the right choice.
This is reality. Click
here to come visit for awhile. |
