Most Tanna accommodation will arrange to meet you at the airport. Transportation is usually by 4 wheel drive vehicles - built to
go anywhere. The roads vary from OK to exciting but be prepared for a few bumps along the way. Generally there are vehicles at the airport that serve as part-time "taxis" but it is best to arrange transport with your accommodation before arrival.
It takes about two hours to go from the airport to the SE side of the island (where the volcano is) and about 20 minutes to go from the airport to Lenikal. The ride over the tall mountains of the central part of the island is a scenic delight. Sometimes you will have the chance to ride in the cab, but at other times you will be able to experience the ‘Vanuatu Way’, riding on the benches in the back of the truck , just like the locals.
There is no public transport or car rentals in Tanna and you will rely on your accommodation to set up transport for tours and shopping. Some accommodation rent bicycles (heavy going on most of the unpaved roads), motor bikes,and even horses. But for the most part you will head off in the accommodation vehicle or tour transport arranged at your accommodation.
