What is it about whales?
Just to see them, even from a distance, even just a spout
of breath and the rise of the glistening huge body from
the sea, rivets you to the instant.
Right there, only about 50 metres from the beach. One,
two, perhaps - yes - three whales. One so small it must
be just a baby. Yes, a baby whale, moving south, maybe
headed back to the Antarctic.
Jessel, as if reading your thoughts, says.
"They come in August. Sometimes in July. Mostly
August. Then they go in October." You glance at
him, reluctantly leaving the whales in memory, and realize
he has seen them passing by since he was a small boy.
